The Story of the Shepherd Boy
Blog Article
Deep within the enchanting rolling hills, resided a young shepherd. His life was mostly here untarnished, simple, and honest. His primary duty was mainly to look after his herd of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the gales among the lone tree on the hilltop were his constant associates. Day after day, looking out for his wards instilled in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for company. On one such day from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome plot.
Tales of predators hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One afternoon he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but found no wolf.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This game laughed for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
